Orange You a Fan of Hummus?

If you think your run-of-the mill hummus is looking and tasting a little ordinary, try this fashionable update - orange is the new black. This recipe from Whole Living and the new book "Power Foods" adds two pureed cooked sweet potatoes to hummus. The result is a dip with a fetching bright orange palette that jump-starts the attitude and fuels you with healthy fiber and beta carotene.

I was somewhat amazed at how one simple addition can revitalize an old standard. I served this sweet potato hummus sprinkled with smoked paprika and with pita chips on the side. The dip was thick, creamy and addictive. And I nearly finished the leftovers for breakfast the next morning.

I'm sure you won't be disappointed if you try it. What simple additions do you make to update old standards?

  2. Love the idea of the smoked paprika in this, but I'm a big fan of smoked paprika. I don't serve hummus often because my husband's family doesn't care for it, but thankfully I have a few friends that do. Keep shaking up old standards T.W., that what fun about cooking.

  3. I've been making a sweet potato dip for years that looks exactly like Cheese Whiz -- but it's just whipped cooked sweet potato, garlic, and a bit of olive oil. And some heat, of course. Crossing it with some chickpeas and tahini would be a great variation. I like roasted red peppers in my hummus, and extra garlic.

  4. Now that's something I would never have thought of. Sweet potatoes in hummus. What a super idea. The color alone is tempting. Unfortunately, I don't make hummus often because one of my sons is allergic to it...but I'm saving this recipe for company, T. W.

  5. Happy Sunday, T.W!

I must admit, I'm a bit skeptical about this combination. Does it even make it hummus anymore I wonder? I may just give it a try to find out! It sure is a "purty" festive color:)

    Thanks for sharing...

  6. I recently discovered hummus (I know I am slow and sheltered.) I also have a large box of fresh picked sweet potatoes (I live in the #1 sweet potato growing county in our state.) Sounds good to me. Thanks.

MMMMM,..;I laughed when I read your title! :)

I love this tasty recipe a lot & I love that you added the smoked paprika on top! Did you add the picanté version of the dulce, normal version?

    Lovely presentation too, my friend!

  16. Okay, from now on, its sweet potatoes and smoked paprika in my hummus.

Hummus is already a pretty healthy food with the addition of sweet potatoes, it brings it to a new level.

    Always,
