As the summer ripens, the landscape is always evolving at Restoration Farm. Sunflowers immediately catch the eye as you turn the corner from the wooded path out into the first open field. 
Sunflowers were first cultivated in Mexico and Peru, perhaps as early as 2600 BC.

I love sunflowers! I had a row of perennials (Obedient plant) along my west face by the side of the house that I had never really liked, so last fall I ripped them all out and this year I planted sunflower seeds. A pretty good crop of sunflowers came up, but they're shaded for lots of the day so they're barely starting to bloom. Such a pretty and happy flower!
ReplyDeleteThe flowers are marvelous. Do they sell the seed or just the beautiful flowers... they do kiss the sun, don't they??? You can see why van gogh was so besotted with them... lovely snaps, btw!!

ReplyDeleteI am sensitive to the beauty of sunflowers as well; there is a little restaurant by our house, an outdoor place, rather stylish, that has used sunflowers as a decorating accent throughout their place. So cheerful.

ReplyDeleteI think sunflowers are the most uplifting of all flowers. I love seeing them in bunches at the market. I hope one day to be able to see them in a massive field.
ReplyDeleteSunflowers in particular remind me of my grandpa who used to grow several rows of them on his ranch. At the end of the season, the heads would get so heavy, the flowers would droop.
I love sunflowers!!! when we were in France seeing fields of them was just amazing!! thanks for sharing these wonderful images with us!
